Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ's
1. What is an Approved Inspection Authority (AIA)?
An Approved Inspection Authority is an independent entity accredited by Department of Employment and Labour as well as SANAS tasked to act as independent electrical compliance inspectors for either the User, the Contractor or in very special circumstances the Department of Employment and Labour. An AIA is not permitted to any electrical installations work, or to act as an electrician to ensure that the reports are independent and impartial and can be acted upon by the regulators. AIA reports enjoy special legal status under OHSA and is therefore superior in any dispute or compliance complaint.
2. How does BravoScan as an AIA help people?
BravoScan acts as an impartial watchdog for property owners, buyers, and sellers. As an AIA, we provide peace of mind by conducting expert, third-party inspections that ensure electrical installations are safe and legally compliant. We protect people from substandard workmanship, resolve disputes between clients and contractors, and provide legally superior reports that mitigate risk during property transfers or insurance claims. Essentially, we ensure that your safety is never compromised for the sake of profit.
3. What is an Inspection Body, and why does it differ from an AIA?
Every AIA is an Inspection Body, but not every Inspection Body is an AIA. Under the SANAS framework any entity can become an Inspection Body by subjecting themselves to a quality management framework and many electricians do to improve their quality of work. However, the Department of Employment requires additional requirements in that an Inspection Body may not be an electrical contractor and therefore are prevented from doing any electrical installation work to register as an AIA. And because electrical contracting is more profitable than compliance monitoring, many electricians don’t want to become AIA. Therefore a report by an IB is not more valuable than a normal contractor’s report, but only an AIA’s report outranks an expert or an IB’s report
4. What is an Electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC)?
A certificate of compliance is certificate of compliance issued by a registered person after testing and inspecting an electrical installation ensuring that it complied with the relevant health and safety requirements. It’s important to note that not any electrician may issue a COC, only people duly registered with the Department of Employment and Labour. Thus, clients must request their electrician’s valid registration before engaging in their services.
5. Why must I have a COC?
Electrical Installation Regulations prohibit the use of any electrical installation unless it has been inspected, tested and a COC was issued. It is a criminal offence not to have a COC. Electricity is very dangerous and therefore there is a need to ensure that the installation complies with the health and safety requirements.
6. Why would I need an independent electrical inspection?
Section 39(5)(b) of OHSA provides you with a legal remedy to refute any claim of negligence or non-compliance. Why not ensure that you are legally risk free.
7. Can BravoScan verify an Electrical Certificate of Compliance?
Yes. Bravo Scan can conduct an independent inspection to determine whether the electrical installation complies with regulations and whether the issued Certificate of Compliance accurately reflects the condition of the installation.
But so can you if you ask sensible questions. See our checklist.
8. When is an electrical inspection by an AIA required?
An AIA should be engaged in all scenarios involving material risk, including:
- Buying or selling any property
- After upgrades or post-installation verification
- When you are in dispute with your electrician
- High-risk or high-value installations like solar or dangerous areas
9. Can I claim my costs for employing BravoScan back?
In certain circumstances, especially if there is an agreement between the parties, especially when selling a house, any monies paid to an BravoScan will form part of a claim for damages and/or delict. Reach out to our compliance department with specific questions.
10. Does BravoScan perform electrical installations or repairs?
BravoScan may not perform electrical installation work, we only do electrical compliance inspections. This is to ensure that the integrity, impartiality of the AIA is maintained. Any person claiming that BravoScan is performing electrical work should not be employed.
